The “Big Guys” are keen for .Tel – Google, Apple, Microsoft, Visa & more register

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

We are two weeks into the Sunrise registration period and it looks like the “Big Guys” are keen for .tel.

Telnic, the Registry Operator for the new .tel top level domain, – put out a press release on Monday about all the big name companies that had applied for their .tel names as soon as Sunrise opened on Dec 3rd.

The following “biggies” apparently submitted applications during “the first minute of Sunrise:”

Google, Apple, Microsoft, News Corporation, MySpace, Amex, BP, FedEx, Virgin, Sony, Gap, Visa, McDonalds, Orange, MTV, Dell, Coca-Cola, Vodafone, Honda, Intel, BlackBerry, P&G, Starbucks, Subway, Johnson & Johnson, Dominos, Cisco, Unilever, Best Buy, British Airways and Victoria’s Secret.

The release goes on to name high profile companies in the following sectors: Prestige Brands, Consulting, Banking, Insurance, Media, Hospitality, Energy, Health and Pharmaceuticals, and many more genres.

If you’re a “smallie” that holds a trademark – what are you waiting for?  The big guys got big for a reason.

If you fail to register your trademark during Sunrise and somebody else snags it Landrush or General Registration, you can try to regain it through the ICANN-approved Universal Dispute Resolution Process (UDRP), which can be a long and costly process.

Register your trademark with an official .TEL registrar , or pre-book domains for Landrush today. Landrush registrations are awarded on a first come first served basis, so early pre-booking is strongly advised.

Get a Free Trial VIP.TEL Name

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008
While .TEL does not officially launch until early February 2009, .TEL followers can get a feel for the new TLD by applying for a trial .TEL name through Telnic’s “VIP” Program.

Telnic’s program allows people to create a free .TEL name in the format “YourName”.vip.tel. With a vip.tel name, you’ll be able to add, modify and manage contact information under the Beta release of Telnic’s TelHosting software.

The vip.tel names can be accessed and viewed through web browsers and mobile devices; they will also work with Telnic’s demo applications for Outlook, Windows Mobile, iPhone and Blackberry.

Remember that the TelHosting platform and demo applications are in beta release; while they are not highly polished, they provide a feel for how .TEL will work in actual release. The privacy functionality has not been enabled in the vip.tel names, therefore all the contact information you enter will be public.

And here’s another tip –   the vip.tel requires your phone number to be in international format, eg. +16041231234.  As a North American user, it took an irritating ten minutes until I figured this out. Telnic, if you’re reading this, an example would have been helpful here. Sigh.

Signup for your vip.tel name today by going to http://www.telnic.org/vip/ . Your vip.tel will work until February 3, 2009 when Landrush registration begins.

Register/Pre-book your .TEL domains with an official .TEL registrar today.
