VIP.tel Trial Domains Experience System Upgrade in line with Commercial Release

Friday, January 30th, 2009

If you are among the many .TEL watchers who signed up for beta .TEL domain under the VIP.tel program, Telnic wants you to know that the VIP.tel system is being upgraded.

In an email sent to VIP.tel name holders on January 30, 2009, Telnic states the following:

Thank you for participating in the VIP.tel trial.  We continue to receive a good level of feedback much of which is either being incorporated into the beta trial or which will be available on launch.  Thank you if you have already provided us with your thoughts, and if you have more please do continue to provide it to us.

If for any reason you have not logged in to your domain (we have heard some instances of people not getting a confirmation email), please use the following log in to try your test domain out:

URL: http://demo.vip.tel
Username: XXXXXXX
Password:  If you have forgotten your password please email vip-support@telnic.org

System Update

You may have noticed that the management console was unavailable for a period of time again today.  We have today updated the trial system to include Profiles (which enable you to group, order and select contact information to display, for example, ‘home’, ‘work’, ‘travelling’, ‘vacation’, etc) which brings the functionality of the .tel up to that available in the commercial release.

Updated User Guide

We will shortly be updating the user guide to reflect the changes that have been made in the trial with an explanation of this additional functionality.  This can be found in the same place as before:  http://www.telnic.com/downloads/vipguide.pdf

Please enjoy the renewed control over your contact information that you now have with this release of the trial program and any further comments or questions please email vip-support@telnic.org or join the discussion on the VIP discussion forum at http://dev.telnic.org.

With thanks,

VIP Support

I am excited to try out the new VIP.tel functionality described above – eg. Profiles – and report back.  Since the recent upgrades are supposed to reflect functionality of the commercial release, I’m interested to know what you think as well.  Test it out and give us your Feedback!

6 Reasons Why your Business Should Register a .TEL Domain on March 23

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

If you are wondering about whether or not your business really needs another domain name, I would argue that .TEL is the most compelling domain for individuals and businesses to launch in years.

The .TEL domain has huge potential to make businesses easier to find and contact, as well as help them gain exposure in new global markets.  For around $19.99 US a year,  the potential seems to outweigh the risk by far in my estimation.

Here’s a list of my Top 6 Reasons Why Your  Business Should Register a dot-TEL domain name:

Make your company easier to find, easier to reach, easier to remember
Create your own interactive communications hub under YourBusiness.TEL.  Publish all the ways your business can be contacted: phone, mobile, fax, email, VoIP IM handles and geo-location data. Store additional information such as website URL’s and multi-lingual keywords specific to each of your departments or locations.

Let customers connect directly to the person/department they need
YourBusiness.tel enables you to relay customers to the department or location of their choice using a simple, DNS based  navigation structure

Never lose contact again
YourBusiness.tel is essentially an entry in an online global directory that you have complete access and control over..TEL  allows you to update your contact information in real-time, so it is never inaccurate or out-of-date when customers or prospects want to contact you.

Empower customers with the choice of how to connect
YourBusiness.tel makes your business accessible from any Inertnet device connected to the internet. Customers and prospects need only to type in YourBusiness.tel into a browser, select a method of contact (email, mobile phone,  etc.) and click to initiate communication.

Increase your search engine visibility and drive traffic to your website
YourBusiness.tel can increase your business’ online discoverability in different markets through the publication of multi-lingual keywords for each department and location. These keywords are indexed by leading search engines, improving your overall online visibility.

Gain a web presence – and mobile presence – without hosting or coding
The  .TEL webpage where visitors click to initiate communication also doubles as a mobile website. Because the information contained in .TEL is stored in the DNS, a .TEL page loads incredibly fast compared to traditional website content and html enabling YourBusiness.tel to be accessed quickly by mobile devices.

Reasons to Register a .TEL Domain

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Blogger ‘Forsaken’ over at Domain Marvelous (www.domainmarvelous.com) has published a great two part post on “Reasons to Register your .Tel Domain”. And based on the feedback she’s received, even experienced domain owners and webmasters have a lot to learn about the new extension.tel-circle

.Tel is a new way to share all your contact information by giving them your own easy to remember name – like janedoe.tel. It allows you to store, publish and update your information online and is accessible from any Internet enabled device. There is no need for a website with .TEL, and it can act as a communications hub for your business or personal contacts.

It’s nice to see domain investors coming around on the .TEL domain. The perception that a domain name needs always to be linked to website creation is challenged by dot-tel – and likely is one reason why it’s taken longer for the industry to embrace the concept behind the new domain. It’s great to see people catching on to what a great communication tool .TEL will be for businesses and individuals alike.

Here are some of Forsaken’s “Reason’s to Register” your .TEL :

From Part One

Create and Control your Communications Hub
The .tel enables you to create a fully interactive and live communications hub to take control over how and where customers communicate with you …

Join the Only, Real-Time, Global Directory
Yourbusiness.tel offers you an entry into the first global directory, allowing you to own and control all your contact information and update it in real-time whenever you wish …

Effectively Route Customers to appropriate Departments and Locations
Yourbusiness.tel allows you to easily route customers to the department or location of their choice …

Connect with your Customers from any Device
Yourbusiness.tel makes your business or brand instantly accessible from any device connected to the internet …

Gain an Effective Mobile Presence
Yourbusiness.tel is optimized for mobile devices since it uses small and fast DNS lookups rather than pulling traditional website and html content …

Part Two discusses the advantages of .TEL’s system of storing data directly in the DNS, including:

No website necessary: The contact information stored in the DNS is readily available and efficiently delivered to any device without the need for a website or a webmaster.

Speed: The Domain Name System is optimized for speed. Because it is DNS-based, a .tel lookup takes just a fraction of a second, and is much quicker than loading a typical web page.

Real-Time: Whenever you update your data in the DNS, the change “goes live” immediately.

Improved control: Traditionally, search engines are forced to “read” entire web pages and guess the keywords. The .tel uses the data you supply to the DNS to tell search engines exactly where the keywords are, thereby improving your control over your search results.

VIP.TEL expands functionality: Friending and Privacy

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

The .TEL registry, Telnic, has recently deployed additional functionality to the demo VIP program, including friending requests and privacy settings. Although still designated a demo, these features give a better indication of the power and potential of the .TEL technology.

.TEL friending request

.TEL friending request

These new features are intuitive and easy to use, although beginning the friending request process can be a bit tricky to locate. To initiate a friending request through the demo Telhosting interface, login to your account at http://demo.vip.tel, click the new Friends tab and click “Send” on the Messages panel to launch the Friend Request window.

If you don’t know anyone with a VIP account, you can send a Friend Request to webnames.vip.tel or mattlane.vip.tel to see how it works. (If you don’t have a VIP account, go to http://telnic.org/vip/ or contact Webnames.ca customer support at 1-866-221-7878).

Once your friend request is accepted, you’ll be able to see the information your friend has marked as Private. The exact information you can see depends on the privacy group you’ve been added to. Using the Blackberry application, you can login once and see Private information for any friend with whom you have a friending relationship. If you look up your friend in a web browser, you’ll need to log in on the web page before the private information is displayed.

Reciprocally, you may also receive friending requests which will show up under the Friends tab. You will also receive an e-mail alert to tell you that you’ve received a friending request.

Once you’ve accepted the request, you can either leave them in the “All Friends” group under the Privacy tab, add them to another group, or create a new group.

Groups link private information to people, so after you create a group, you select the contacts to add to the group and also define the information you want them to see. For example, I might add my Work E-mail and Cell Phone number to a group called Business Contacts, as well as adding half a dozen selected contacts. Adding information to a privacy group automatically makes the information private, but you can also define information as Private or Public from the Dashboard, when adding or editing the information.

Please note that in the current version, data in folders (sub-domains) cannot be made private.
